Drone Technology - Who is Emmanuel Balcha?

 


Introducing Emmanuel Balcha, an innovative mind who captivated the nation with his drone technology.


The concept of drones traces its roots back to the ingenious mind of Abraham Karem, known as the Father of the Drone invention, who was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and later moved to Israel. From an early age, Abraham's passion for building airplanes was evident, and he made significant strides in aeronautical engineering. During the Yom Kippur War, he developed his first drone for the Israeli Air Force before eventually immigrating to the United States in the 1970s.


In the United States, Abraham founded "Leading Systems Inc.," where he crafted several improved drone models, including the "Albatross" and "Amber," which evolved into the famous "General Atomics MQ-1" or "Predator" drone, earning him the nickname "Drone Father."


Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles, have become modern-day marvels with extensive applications in various fields such as military, transportation, agriculture, health, photography, wildlife protection, climate change monitoring, and more.


In Ethiopia, Emmanuel Balcha, a lecturer at Dambi Dollo University, has been at the forefront of drone development. With his enthusiasm and dedication, he established the Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at the university. Supported by the center, he successfully built and demonstrated flying capabilities of drones, catching the attention of media and acclaim.


Emmanuel's work has advanced steadily, and he has successfully tested 15 of the 22 multi-purpose drones he built within a year. His vision goes beyond merely testing the drones; he aims to take drone technology to the next level and develop passenger aircraft. Through his passion and determination, Emmanuel has shattered the notion that Ethiopia couldn't realize such technological advancements.


With innovative minds like Emmanuel Balcha pushing the boundaries, Ethiopia embraces the potential of drones for utilities, agriculture, health, data collection, and other essential services. The future of drone technology in Ethiopia looks promising, with the vision of pioneers like Emmanuel leading the way.
